Power BI Desktop Installation

This guide covers installing and using the OctoMesh Connector in Power BI Desktop for local report development.

Prerequisites

  • Windows machine
  • Power BI Desktop installed
  • Administrator privileges

Download

The OctoMesh PowerQuery Connector is available for download from the Download Center.

Installation Steps

  1. Locate the downloaded OctoMeshConnector-*.pqx file.
  2. Copy the file to the Power Query Custom Connectors directory:
    C:\Users\<YourUsername>\Documents\Power BI Desktop\Custom Connectors
  3. Open Power BI Desktop.
  4. Go to File > Options and settings > Options.
  5. Under Security > Data Extensions, select Allow any extension to load without validation or warning.
  6. Restart Power BI Desktop.

The connector certification program is currently undergoing changes and registration for new connector certifications is on hold by Microsoft. Therefore, the OctoMesh Power BI Connector is currently self-signed. Please ensure you trust the source before using self-signed connectors.


Connecting to OctoMesh

Once installed, follow these steps to connect to OctoMesh:

  1. Open Power BI Desktop.
  2. Click Get data > More... > Other.
  3. Search for OctoMesh.
  4. Select the connector and click Connect.
  5. When prompted about third-party data, click Continue.
  6. Enter the connection parameters:
    • Asset Repository Service URI: The base URL of your OctoMesh Asset Repository (e.g., https://assets.meshmakers.cloud/)
    • Tenant ID: Your OctoMesh tenant identifier (e.g., meshdemo)
    • Runtime Query ID: The rtId of the Runtime Query you want to import
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click Sign in and authenticate with your OctoMesh account.
  9. Once authenticated, click Connect.

Your data will appear as a table in Power BI, ready for use in reports and dashboards.


Creating a Runtime Query

Before connecting, you need a Runtime Query in OctoMesh:

  1. Log in to your OctoMesh account.
  2. Navigate to the Runtime Queries section, see Runtime Query Builder Documentation.
  3. Create a new Runtime Query or select an existing one.
  4. Note the rtId of the Runtime Query you wish to use.
